Ready to make a lapbook for All Those Secrets of the World? This picture book by Jane Yolen is the most recent book we rowed with our Five in a Row (FIAR) Curriculum. We are loving using FIAR Volume Two (2nd Ed.) this year for second grade, and making lapbooks is such a fun part of what we do each week.
If you want lapbooking materials to use along with All Those Secrets of the World, be sure to keep reading! I’m sharing the activities and resources we used with this unit study AND you can get the lapbook I made as well.
All Those Secrets of the World Summary
All Those Secrets of the World tells the story of a young girl, Janie, whose father goes off to war. While he’s gone, the family copes with his absence. Meanwhile, she learns a secret of the world from her older cousin. This secret, she explains to her father when he returns, is why he remembers her being so small when he left.
It’s a lovely story, told from the perspective of a child, with a happy ending. And if you love picture books for their beautiful artwork, this one will not disappoint. The watercolor illustrations are well done.
Rowing All Those Secrets of the World for FIAR
I typically cover one subject each day as we row our book. While I won’t mention each activity from every subject, here is how we covered science, art and social studies for All Those Secrets of the World.
Science
Science was an area we spent a good amount of time on during this unit study. I found a free Wetlands Coloring Book from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. I printed a copy and she worked on coloring a page or two each day while I read from our read aloud chapter book.
In order to reference accurate pictures for the animal pictures in the coloring book, I pulled out some fabulous nature books from our home library: Reader’s Digest ABC’s of Nature: A Family Answer Book and Reader’s Digest North American Wildlife: An Illustrated Guide to 2,000 Plants and Animals.
These books are filled with amazing pictures and information. You can find used copies all over the internet, and I highly recommend them!
Next, we read the book Oil Spill: Deepwater Horizon by Meish Goldish. It taught us about how devastating pollution can be to the animals that live in our oceans.
We also borrowed from the library the DVD Bill Nye the Science Guy: Wetlands. It does a great job explaining wetlands and their importance in the ecosystem.
Art
We took plenty of time to enjoy the details of the beautiful watercolor illustrations in this book. Then, my daughter tried her hand at a watercolors using this Fancy Glitter Fish project from Deep Space Sparkle. It’s an art resource website I use frequently to keep art simple and easy in our homeschool.
Social Studies
For social studies, we discussed patriotism and how it was expressed in the story. We talked about ways we show patriotism in our family, from flying an American flag on our porch, to the various holidays celebrated each year. We also listened to the song referred to in the story, Over There, Over There on YouTube.
